Viktor Rozov (1913–2004) is a Russian playwright, whose play «Ever Alive» was the first play performed by Sovremennik Theatre. This play was screened as the film «The Cranes Are Flying», and the film won the main prize of Cannes Festival. Rozov was one of the most popular authors in 60-s and 70-s, and his works were staged often.

A usual evening in a «good family» of renown writer Zharkov seems quiet and peaceful. The adult children Nina, Kim and the favorite grandson Albert listen to the new «epoch-making» novel of their dad and granddad. A true Family Idyll! But then Kim suddenly falls asleep. The old man is outraged, to say the least, it is a real kick in the teeth! And he becomes so agitated that nobody can appease him. No, it is hardly and Idyll..

...From the evening till the afternoon is not a full day, a short period of time. The culmination is at night. Why at night? Viktor Rozov is an outstanding playwright, he hides intrigue in the least expected places. The night is not only the time of sleep and dreams, it is also a time for revelations and confessions.

When it gets nearly dark guests appear in the house. A scientist from Siberia, the former lover of Nina, Lyova Gruzdev, the main culprit of her unsuccessful personal life. A friend of Zharkov, Yegoryev, sincerely telling his writer-friend about the worthlessness of his works. But the main guest is Alla, the former wife of Kim and the wife of an influential diplomat; Kim still loves her.

The past seems to have broken into the house and to demand the honest answers for the unresolved questions. All they have is only one night. The short summer night. The night of truth for the Zharkovs.

And then there is a morning. An hour in the morning is worth two in the evening, as the saying goes. The main thing is to keep the family together and to remain the humans. Can they?

Vyacheslav Dolgachev:

«The plays of the Soviet classics and the period of the Krushchev Thaw seems to be outdated now. They may be considered not only ‘the yesterday’, but ‘the day before the yesterday’. But if you look the plays of Rozov closer you can see many values that disappear and are lost from our life, from our past, the past, that we generally don’t like and don’t want to have anything to do with.

Today the measure of our life becomes a success, any success, by any means. We forget that the success must be a result of a good cause. And majority of people are not successful. What to do with them? How to treat them? What should they do with themselves, if they know the success is only for others? And where are those moral census that helps us to live? Through the thickness of time in Rozov’s «From the Evening Till the Afternoon» we see the unchangeable and so necessary moral landmarks for any time.
