Why this wonderful N. Ostrovsky’s play have not been staged for more than hundred years? Anyway, it is not the only one. But just after it had been written in 1864 «The Jokers» had a great success in the Maly Theatre. They were staged nearly every day for several months, and this was unbelievable for those times. The play was visited by L. N. Tolstoy, who told his family that «the comedy is very touching, even too much», and recommended to visit the play for sure. Ostrovsky himself considered «The Jokers» a play that is necessary for the repertory of every Russian theatre.

The play keeps its relevance today: the story of some ordinary and modest people in the epoch of changes, when the market takes its toll, when the money is the main thing, when dangerous plays and pranks of different «jokers» ruin the usual way of life and destroy everything that seemed unshakeable. That is why for every character in the play the main aim is not only to survive but also not to let the shadow swallow the light in their hearts and retain their dignity.

...A poor retired official Obroshenov with two beautiful daughters patiently suffers the humiliations from several scoundrels who give him a wad of false money just for fun...
